Code Name Oneiric Ocelot

Ubuntu has announced that version 11.10 of the popular Linux distribution is due for release in November of 2011. This latest version has been codenamed Oneiric Ocelot. The word oneiric is used to convey a dreamlike state.

The name Oneiric Ocelot was chosen in order to epitomize the innovation process, which he describes as a union of daydream and discipline. Developers are now concentrated on delivering version 11.04, which has been given the code name Natty Narwhal, and it will debut in April of 2011. This enterprising new version will introduce a completely new desktop experience centered on the Unity shell. It exemplifies the most symbolic user interface overhaul in the history of Ubuntu.

Unity is developing very well according to the latest 11.04 pre-release builds. However, there are still plenty of improvements in the course of subsequent pre-releases. It is more likely that resolving deferred Unity features will take precedence for Oneiric. There will also likely to be minor bugs and other questions to be addressed that will become apparent when users provide feedback that will be available once Natty brings Unity to an increased number of audiences.
One highlight of this latest version is the Qt-based Unity 2D environment, an alternative application of Unity, which does not need hardware-accelerated graphics. Unity 2d will be a solution to those users who do not have proper video hardware or driver support to run the traditional OpenGl-enabled Unity environment.

The incorporation of Qt will provide more opportunities for third-party developers. Ubuntu developers are also in the process of making this latest release available to all users, with a 2D experience to supplement the OpenGL based unity for those users that have the hardware to manipulate it. The launching of Qt will give developers more opportunities to create user interfaces that are both functional and pleasing to the eye.
